Sangyemenla es el Buddha de la medicina en el Buddhismo Tibetano y se le considera el maestro de la curación de color Lapis Lázuli. Como Shakyamuni lleva las ropas de un monje. Su mano izquierda está en el mudra de meditación, sosteniendo un cuenco de mendicante que contiene un néctar medicinal. Su mano derecha adopta el mudra de dar (varada mudra) y sostiene el tallo de la planta de myrobalán (considerada la medicina que cura las enfermedades físicas y mentales).

En el Tíbet se considera al Buddha de la medicina como la fuente de las artes curativas, porque a través suyo tomaron cuerpo las enseñanzas de los Cuatro Tantras Médicos, que forman la base de la medicina tibetana. De acuerdo con los Cuatro Tantras, la causa básica de cada enfermedad se encuentra en los tres venenos engañosos: el desconcierto de la ignorancia, el apego y el odio.

Esta pintura se ha realizado con una técnica especial llamada "Sunset" o "Puesta de Sol", que reproduce el color del atardecer en el fondo de la thangka.

Sangyemenla is the Buddha of medicine in Tibetan Buddhism and is considered the master of healing of Lapis Lazuli color. Like Shakyamuni he wears the robes of a monk. His left hand is in the meditation mudra, resting in his lap and holding a begging bowl filled with medical nectar and fruit. His right hand rests upon his knee with palm facing outward in the mudra granting blessings (varada mudra) and holds the stem of myrobalan plant (renowned as the king among medicines because of its effectiveness in treating both mental and physical diseases)

In Tibet the Medicine Buddha is revered as the source of the healing arts for it is through him that the teachings embodied in the Four Medical Tantras, the basis of tibetan medicine, came into being. According to the Four Tantras, the fundamental cause of every disease is to be found in the three poisonous delusions ignorant bewilderment, attachement and hatred.

This painting has been done with a special technique called "Sunset", which reproduces the color of the sunset in the background of the thangka.
