Tara es la divinidad de compasión o, como su nombre sugiere, la salvadora. Tara tiene numerosas emanaciones para ayudar al máximo de seres que sufren, pero las emanaciones más conocidas son Tara Blanca y Tara Verde. La naturaleza extremadamente compasiva, benevolente y pacífica de Tara, hacen de ella la más popular y reverenciada de las deidades para los tibetanos.

TARA BLANCA

En esta Thangka aparece Tara sentada sobre un disco lunar que se encuentra apoyado sobre un loto multicolor que crece del agua que simboliza la vida. Sobre su cabeza lleva una diadema incrustada con gemas preciosas y su cuerpo está adornado con numerosas joyas. Su mano derecha se encuentra en el Varadha mudra (el gesto de dar), la izquierda sostiene el tallo de una flor de Loto que representa los Budas del pasado, presente y futuro. Encima del halo de Tara se encuentra la figura de Garuda. Tara Blanca tiene ojos en las palmas de las manos y en las plantas de los pies, que suman con los tres que se encuentran en su rostro un total de siete. Estos ojos nos muestran su habilidad de ver el sufrimiento de todos los seres. En el torso lleva dos chales, uno pequeño anudado a su talle y uno mayor que flota alrededor de su cuerpo. En la parte inferior lleva ropa coloreada como un arco iris, cubierta por una tela dorada.

La figura está rodeada de un nimbo dorado en cuyo exterior hay un círculo de flores. Delante de la figura hay una diversidad de ofrendas.

Esta pintura está realizada con la difícil técnica del fondo negro (nagtang). Sólo los mejores pintores son capaces de hacerlas.

Tara is the goddes of compassion or, as her name suggests, the ‘one-who-saves'. Tara has several emanations in order to help as may beings from suffering as possible, but the most familiar incarnations are the white and Green Taras. Given Tara's extremely compassionate, benevolent and peaceful nature she is one of the most popular and revered deities among the Tibetans. Tara is a symbol of peace, prosperity, long life, health and good fortune.

WHITE TARA

In this Thangka Tara appears seated upon a moon disc placed on a multicolour lotus that grows from water symbolizing life. Upon her head she wears a jewel-studded diadem and her graceful form is adorned with many beautiful jewels and ornaments. Her right hand is in the boon-granting gesture (Varadha mudra), her left holds the stem of the pure white lotus flower that represents the Buddhas of past, present and future. Above Tara's vibrant halo there is Garuda. Tara's serene face contains three eyes, with the palms of her hands and soles of her feet also each containing an eye. These eyes signify her ability to see and understand the sufferings of all beings. She wears two coloured scarves on her upper torso, one fastened about her waist and another one flowing softly about her body. On her lower body she wears a rainbow coloured cloth richly patterned in gold.

Tara's figure is encircled by a golden nimbus with an array of flowering flora of various types. There are several offerings to the for of the figure.

This painting is done with the difficult technique of the black background (nagtang). Only the best painters are able to make them.
